New Year’s One Day 23-24: 2nd place

An annual tradition continued again this year – the New Year’s One Day with Coastal Trail Runs.

I’ve run it a few times before:

This time, I ran 33 miles in 6 hours – good enough for 2nd place. Not a PR for me, but an okay result because this wasn’t a target race and I signed up last minute. Had a lot of run running some miles with Mandy (who came in 3rd, both at this race and at Firetrails) and met some new friends as well.

Swag

The new course is actually pretty great. The prior course was a mile around Crissy Field, which is obviously an iconic location, but now does not allow overnight events. The new course is at Hellyer Park, in San Jose, around a lake. It is 95% paved, which is a bit tough on the body, but the figure-8 shape made it more fun because you could see other runners at the crossings. Checking out the birds on the lake was fun too.

The course: do this as many times as possible

The awesome photographers at Foggy Bay Photos really committed to being out there for the full six hour race and taking pictures on every lap (and in some cases, multiple times a lap). I ran out of poses for them after lap four, having exhausted waving, jumping, heel kicks, finger guns, peace signs, etc, so started doing the alphabet, with varying degrees of success. Will let you be the judge.

Overall a very fun day. Continue to love the races that Coastal puts on. No better way to finish out the year.

  1. The crime situation in the city claims its next victim. At least the race hasn’t moved to Austin yet.
